In 1984, the National Bunraku Theater, a theater built expressly for bunraku, opened in Osaka.  This is the headquarters for bunraku performances and related activities.  Theaters constructed for bunraku include special features such as the stage with a pit (funazoko) for the puppets and puppeteers, as well as a raised dais (yuka) for the narrator (tayu) and shamisen player.
